Nairobi gets Quiet?
When I hear “Africa” the first images that pop into my head are from Kenya. Both the chaos and construction of Nairobi as well as the small towns and villages in the West by Lake Victoria.
Nairobi is the third stop on my year-abroad adventure.
We are here to experience life on the African continent, and while Africa Eats doesn’t have an office anywhere, when the team and bizi meet, it is always in Nairobi.
Why here? Because Nairobi is something of the New York City of Africa. A financial center for capital flowing through East Africa. The business center for the East African Community of countries. And with Kenya Air providing direct flights to most African cities, making it a convenient place to gather a pan-African group.
This is my twelfth time in this country in the last 10 years, but the first time I’m living here instead of just visiting for a few days or weeks, and the first time I’ve ever experienced quiet in this city. My Nairobi-based assistant found a newly-built apartment complex just a few minutes west of Westlands, and surprise, this neighborhood is actually quiet. I didn’t know Nairobi did quiet. I like quiet.
If you live in Nairobi or are stopping through in the next two months, please let me know. I’m hosting Africa Eats’ 2026 Annual Gathering on February 5th and then flying in seven “fledgling” SMEs for Fledge Africa the week of February 16th.
